The Other White Drink
10 Ways to Incorporate Soymilk Into Your Family's Diet
What caring, nurturing parent hasn't tried to introduce healthier foods into the family's daily trips to the refrigerator and back? And how often has the response been, "I don't like it. What is it?"
Where family members are concerned, especially children, there's often a resistance to trying something new. It's a power game that's based more on principle than actual taste. So perhaps a change in tactics is what's called for – one that's not about pleading with reluctant or picky eaters to try something new but instead gets them to eat the same things they've always enjoyed, only made with a new and healthier ingredient: soymilk. It's lower in fat than regular milk and has no cholesterol.
"Soy provides a healthy source of protein and nutrients," says Eugene Lye, brand economist of Vitasoy USA Inc. "Incorporating small amounts of soy into your child's diet helps them learn good nutritional habits and teaches them at an early age that they can eat healthier without changing the tastes of their favorite foods."
So where do you start? Here are some easy-to-make and easy-to-swallow ways that Vitasoy USA Inc. recommends introducing soymilk and other soy-related products into the daily family diet:
1. If your spouse likes milk or cream in his or her coffee, use soymilk instead. It has a rich consistency, and only the most sensitive palette can tell the difference as long as you keep the carton out of sight.
2. As for the kids, chocolate milk is chocolate milk. You can either use soymilk with a mix – adding an extra spoonful or two in the beginning to make it extra chocolaty – or you can simply buy chocolate-flavored soymilk. VITASOY makes both Regular and Light varieties.
