Toasting the New Year
Tips for Entertaining Guests Safely By Donna Smith
Hosts can enhance the enjoyment of holiday festive parties by encouraging adults to celebrate the spirit of the season responsibly.
"Hosting a great holiday party starts with the planning," says Anthony Walton, operations manager at the Central Park Boathouse in New York City. "But it doesn't stop once the guests have arrived and the mingling has begun. As the host, it is essential to make sure there's a system in place so that everyone makes it home safely at the end of the night."
This holiday season, follow these tips from the Great Party Guide, a publication of Anheuser-Busch Companies, Inc.,for a fun and memorable time:
- When serving alcoholic beverages, serve food. Offer a variety of good foods with your alcoholic beverages.
- Offer non-alcoholic beverages. Have something for everyone: soft drinks or a non-alcohol beer, such as O'Doul's. Make guests feel welcome, regardless of what they drink.
- Serve each guest one drink at a time. Spacing drinks throughout a party can help your guests stay within their personal limits. Never force drinks on anyone. If serving wine, don't refresh unfinished glasses as this makes it difficult for guests to keep track of how much they're drinking.
- Serve "measured" drinks. Beer and flavored malt beverages contain 4.2 to 6 percent alcohol by volume and come in standard-sized packages, so it's easy to keep track of how much you are drinking. However, the alcohol by volume may vary dramatically in various hard liquor drinks due to the type of liquor used and the amount poured.
