Awesome Foods for Active Kids: The ABCs of Eating For Energy And Health (Hunter House, 2006) by Anita Bean

A Review

By Charlene Torkelson

Pages:  1  2

In addition to explaining what healthy eating is, there are charts and diagrams giving even the most knowledgeable insight into what everything actually does – all those vitamins, minerals, carbs, fats and proteins. For example, do you know about the Glycemic Index? Or why it's important? There are charts to explain weight, calories, activities and food content. You can even find out what RDAs and DRIs are and how they affect your child's diet. With all the new fad diets out emphasizing certain foods over others, this book gives a complete and healthy understanding of the importance of all the food groups. The information is well documented from expert sources, and all the charts are easy to follow.

One of the greatest helps for parents is the menu planning guides and recipes found at the end of the book. All recipes contain nutritional information, as well as suggestions for companion dishes – and best of all, all recipes have been tried and recommended by real kids. Awesome Foods for Active Kids is a useful manual for everything you wanted to know about healthy eating no matter what the age of your child might be. Who knows, even adults could learn a few things about eating healthy.
