How Important Is That First Meal of the Day When You're Expecting?

"The gold standard for a healthy breakfast is whole-grain cereal, nonfat milk and fruit," says Somer. "You need quality grains, some protein and fruit or juice."
"Have a pre-made smoothie that you can shake up and drink in the car or a container of cereal ready so you can take it with you," says Johnson. Planning your breakfast the night before makes it easy even if you're busy.
If you experience morning sickness, you can and should try to have something for breakfast. The key is to determine what works for you. "Get in touch with what sounds good," says Somer. "If something cold and crisp sounds good, try a piece of lettuce and cheese. If something wet and sour sounds good, sucking on a lemon before eating anything may help."
