Dinner On the Go
Feeding Babies and Toddlers When You're Out and About
By Renee Roberson
When Eating Out Is Unavoidable
While parents may have the best intentions and try to eat most of the family meals at home, eating out is sometimes the only option when traveling or trying to accommodate the schedules of busy family members. Dr. Renna offers parents alternatives to help feed their babies and toddlers more nutritiously when eating out. Ask a restaurant if they can make your pizza with whole-wheat crust and load it up with vegetables rather than the usual pepperoni. The tomato sauce is good for young children because it contains the healthy antioxidant lycopene. At Chinese restaurants, opt for chicken and vegetables with steamed rice.
At fast food restaurants, be wary of some supposed healthy choices that are now being offered with children's meals. Many times the yogurt and granola served has a lot of added sugar as well as high fructose corn syrup. Choose a fresh fruit cup with 2 percent milk instead.
Car Cuisine: Not Always the Best Route
We've all seen it and done it. Hastily running errands or traveling between schools and home, we often let our children eat and drink while in their car seats. Unfortunately, it is not always the safest alternative to feeding young children. But Koff believes it is a practice that can be easily fixed. Want to see more?
