Craving Sugar While Expecting
Tips for Tackling Your Sweet Tooth
By Shannon McKelden
Remember, though, that not all pregnancies are created equal when it comes to sweet cravings, even if you've had them with previous pregnancies. Gustafsson found that during her second pregnancy all was well. "The sweet craving was non-existent in the second pregnancy," she says.
Being aware of the possibility of sweet cravings – even if you were free of them with your first pregnancy – can help you be prepared for them.
"I found peanut butter and bananas eaten together really helped with easing the chocolate craving," Cornwell says. "It was great for my diabetic diet because of the protein in the peanut butter. I would make myself shakes with peanut butter, milk, bananas and ice cubes or just have a spoonful of peanut butter with half a banana."
Dr. Kulze recommends the following as healthy alternatives to sweets:
- Dark chocolate (60 percent or more cocoa): "My top-rated healthy choice," she says. "Loaded with beneficial antioxidants that enhance blood flow and decadently tasty."
- 100-percent fruit sorbets, sherbets, low-fat yogurt or light ice cream
- 100-percent frozen fruit ice pops
- Granola bars
- Dried fruit (apricots, raisins, prunes, apples, etc.): "You can freeze them, which gives them a yummy gummy-bear-like consistency," she says.
"Try to remember that if there is no nutritional value to what you are eating, you really should skip it," Dr. Ashton says. "The baby isn't craving a cookie – you are! But your 'job' for 40 weeks is to nourish your developing baby. This is your one shot at eating well! Keep your eye on your goal here and you can triumph over any pregnancy cravings that are unhealthy!"
