Grazing Questions

Is It OK to Eat All Day While Pregnant?

By Melinda Copp

"If a pregnant woman is grazing all day because of mindless munching, eating out of stress or a feeling of 'why not eat a lot now since I'm supposed to gain weight anyways,' then grazing is not so healthy for her," Johnson says.

How Can You Prevent Excessive Weight Gain?
Grazing, pregnant or not, has a bad reputation because eating all day long makes it easy for people to lose track of their calorie intake.

"Grazing makes it harder to keep a handle on what you're taking in each day," Somer says. "When grazing, eat the foods that are part of your regular meal plan."

And while you're eating your way through the day, keep in mind that calories do count. Even if you're eating primarily healthy foods, you can overshoot your calorie allowance with just a few indulgences.

Priscilla Grim, a mom from Brooklyn, N.Y., snacked on baby carrots, granola and bunches of grapes at her desk. But at night, she overindulged in ice cream. "I ate constantly while I was pregnant and I gained 80 pounds as a result," she says. "And except for the pint of [ice cream] every night, I did eat healthy."

If you are compelled to graze, make sure you dump all the junk food in the house.

"Try low-calorie choices based on what you're craving," Johnson says. "Veggie sticks if it's a crunch you're after, grapes or other sweet fruit if it's sweet you're after and yogurt for creamy."

The bottom line? If you're hungry, ladies, by all means eat. "Just don't have junk in the house in the first place," Somer says. "Then when you go to graze, healthy food will be there."
