Food allergies and sensitivities can be quite serious, and there are certain foods that seem to have a greater likelihood to induce an allergic reaction or a food sensitivity issue.

"Strawberries seem to especially be a common cause of food allergy or sensitivity in children," O'Shea says. "For that reason, I would not recommend giving strawberries to a child under the age of 2. This is especially important if there is any family history of food allergies or if there have been other food allergies identified in the child. Strawberry allergies affect thousands, with symptoms ranging from swelling and itching to much more severe reactions that require immediate emergency medical attention and can even lead to death."

If someone in your family is allergic to strawberries or other types of berries, it may be wise to talk to your doctor. And if allergies do not run in the family, it's still a good idea to watch your child closely after his first taste.

The Versatile Berry

Strawberries are very versatile and can be prepared in many fun ways for children.

O'Shea offers these suggestions:
