For the meat group, Andrews says to stock up on lean meat, like skinless chicken breast or fish, when it's on sale, and keep canned beans in the pantry. "Beans are great to have in a pinch to add to soups, casseroles or salads or to whip up quick chili or burritos," Andrews says. "Keep instant brown rice on hand for an easy side dish. Baby carrots are also great to have available for a quick snack or side vegetable."

Stocking a healthy kitchen does not have to be complicated. Meyer says these items are her top 10 "must haves" in a healthy kitchen:

  • frozen vegetables
  • whole-wheat couscous
  • frozen vegetable burgers
  • can of bean soup
  • chicken or vegetable bouillon cubes
  • deli-sliced turkey, vegetarian deli meat and/or low-fat cheese from deli
  • baby carrots
  • canned tuna
  • canned black, garbanzo and refried beans
  • li>low-fat or nonfat yogurt
