Oh, That Eggnog!
The Dish on Healthy Holiday Eating from a Nutritionist
By Kelly A. Hammer
Tips for Navigating the Holidays Healthfully
- Have a snack before going to a party. Don't skip meals before – you will be so hungry at the party that you will overeat.
- If you are bringing food to a celebration, bring a healthier option.
Drink a full glass of water before heading for the buffet table. Buffet foods tend to come in bite-sized, calorie-packed portions. Resist popping the whole item into your mouth at once. Instead, take the time to chew and enjoy the flavor. A mini sausage roll has the same amount of calories regardless if you eat it all at once or savor it over a few bites. - Mingle and visit with others. Standing alone next to the buffet table brings your focus only to the food and not the people in your company.
- Each time you drink an alcoholic beverage or decadent coffee beverage, also drink a glass of water.
- At home, stock the kitchen with healthful snacks, fruits and cut vegetables. You and your family will have plenty of opportunity outside the home to enjoy special treas and desserts.
