The Pros and Cons of an Organic Pregnancy

In non-organic environments, growth hormones like bovine are given to cattle to increase their milk production. There is a lot of debate over the use of these hormones and studies are underway on the effects these hormones have on humans. Organic milk comes from cattle that are not given these growth hormones.

Pesticides and the Fetus

"Women who eat organic foods are protecting their babies from chemicals that cause cancer, immune system problems and brain damage," says Dr. Landrigan, who authored the book Raising Healthy Children in a Toxic World (Rodale Press, 2002) and directed a major study at the National Academy of Sciences on pesticides and children's diets. "Pesticides cause harmful effects on humans, and no one is more vulnerable to those toxins than a baby that is so small and going through development."

Angela Stengler, a naturopathic doctor in California, began eating organic foods when she was in medical school. She now has two children and is pregnant with her third. "When I started medical school and realized how many pesticides were used and the effects they can have, I began eating organic," she says. For Stengler, it was easy to transition to an organic diet because she always tried to eat healthy and avoid nitrates (chemicals found in processed foods like hot dogs and lunchmeats).

Stengler's husband, Mark, is also an N.D. and they share a practice in La Jolla, Calif. They are co-authors of the book Your Vital Child (Rodale Press, 2001), which addresses natural ways to keep children at their healthiest.
