The Vegetarian Family Cookbook
A Review by Denise Steele-Darnell
By Denise Steele-Darnell
I have just finished browsing through Nava Atlas' brand-new cookbook, The Vegetarian Family Cookbook (Broadway, 2004), and it has given me motivation to cook again! With two picky vegetarian children and no time to cook it has been difficult lately to even think of meal ideas. Atlas' cookbook is a wonderful addition to my family's bookshelf.
Atlas' book is divided into a number of food areas including Easy Breakfast Treats, Soothing Soups and Salads, Pasta, Tofu and Seitan, Vegetables and Grains, Easy Side Dishes, Sandwiches and School Lunches, Healthy Snacks and Baked Goods. It is perfect for the vegetarian or vegan family, and each recipe is clearly marked as to whether it has dairy or eggs in it.
What I really enjoy about the cookbook is how most of the recipes have easy-to-find ingredients and are simple to make. Many vegetarian cookbooks involve running from health store to health store to find obscure foods that you only use once. Many of Atlas' ingredients will already be found in your kitchen. The recipes are quick to read and do and at the end of most of them she includes other ingredients that you can add to that dish. I also loved how she lists page numbers of side dishes that go with that meal.
