New Year Nibbles
Hors d'oeuvres for New Year's Eve!
By Debbie Friedman
A Little Good Will For the New Year
I'd like to mention one last recipe, a recipe for helping others. When we celebrate a new millennium or any celebration that brings us together, it is often a time for reflection about the future and what we want most. Having children has made me reflect much more about the kind of person I want to be, and the type of world I want for my children. With this in mind, I like to remind my family, including myself, that we are very lucky to have our basic needs met when many people throughout the world and even in our own community go without. Sparing my family and friends a lecture on the topic, here's my plan to make a small difference for the New Year: Many times when we have friends over we are asked if they would like us to bring something to share (potlucks are big around here). This time I'm going to tell them thanks, but the food and drinks will be supplied. However, I will have a collection bag out for the local food bank if they would like to contribute a can.
It doesn't take much to make an event special: good company, good food and good hearts. I think we have all the makings for a terrific December 31, 1999 even if we don't make it to midnight.
