Stick-It-Out Stamina
Maintaining Your Weight Loss Goals
By Catherine Cram, M.S.
Don't Go Sugar-Free
Contrary to what most people think, non-fat, sugar-free cookies, candy and other treats aren't always helpful when trying to lose weight.
Some studies have found that people just eat more of these empty-nutrient, low-calorie treats than they would have if they'd just had a regular cookie or treat. Eat these foods sparingly, and instead, create your diet from fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains and nutrient-rich dairy products, soy, fish and/or lean meats.
Walk It Away
Remember, exercise will help jumpstart weight loss and help build the lean muscle mass that will increase your metabolism. Make fitness a part of your healthy lifestyle. Add a dog to your family – walking the pooch twice a day will keep you moving and losing weight. Buy some hand weights and pump iron while you watch TV with the kids. Or, join a local gym for expert advice on weight training and which exercises are best for you.
Keep in mind that preventing weight gain is always easier than having to lose it. Incorporating a healthful attitude about your body, your eating style and level of exercise is most of the battle!
