The French classic creme brulee has a bad reputation. Besides being considered by some to be the world's perfect dessert, it is also associated with fancy dinner parties and being difficult to make. While it is a wonderful grand finale to a formal dinner, it is also great anytime, and very easy to make.
Creme brulee (krehm broo-LAY), meaning "burnt cream" in French, is simply a custard with a hard sugar topping. It is a sinfully rich dessert, which is why it's usually served in small ceramic baking dishes. While you will be tempted to ask for more, it's probably best that you don't. creme brulee is very high in calories and fat, but we won't discuss that fact. Some things are better not talked about! Just remember to save creme brulee for special occasions or to serve it only occasionally.
With only five easy-to-get ingredients, it is also very easy and inexpensive to make. The custard is made of egg yolks, cream, vanilla and sugar. Different variations of the basic recipe can be made as well. Coffee, chocolate, almond and orange are just a few. Then there's that famous sugar topping....
