What's For Dinner?

Grab a Sandwich!

In the 18th century, John Montagu, the fourth Earl of Sandwich, invented a new food as a way to avoid interrupting a card game. Quite the gambler, Montagu got so engrossed in a game of cards that instead of getting up to eat, he ordered his servants to put the meat between two slices of bread. This portable concoction, easy enough to eat at the card table, became known as the "sandwich" in 1762. Though introduced to America in a cookbook by Elizabeth Leslie in 1827 with a recipe for ham sandwiches, the sandwich didn't become popular until the introduction of soft white bread in the early 1900s.

When Wonder Bread began selling pre-sliced loaves in the 1930s, the sandwich became a regular staple of the American diet. According to the NPD Group, Inc., today's average American consumes 193 sandwiches per year. Coincidentally, the ham sandwich remains the all-time favorite.

Did you know that August is National Sandwich Month? In honor of this special month, I'm sharing four of my tasty sandwich recipes with you. Though sandwiches are usually thought of as lunchtime fare, these recipes proved delicious and satisfying as the main entr裠at dinnertime, as well. Featured recipes include Baked Deli Sandwich, Grilled Roast Beef and Swiss Sandwiches, French Dips and Hot Ham and Cheese Wraps.

Well, what are you waiting for? Why not try one of these delectable sandwiches for dinner tonight?

Baked Deli Sandwich
Though you could serve it as a main dish, this stuffed sandwich also makes a wonderful appetizer. My husband and I often indulge in an array of snacks and appetizers instead of a normal dinner on Sundays during football season. I made this recipe quite often last season because it's easy to assemble and bakes quickly. This recipe also gives you the freedom to experiment with different meats and cheeses. The seasoned butter brushed across the top really gives this sandwich its fantastic flavor.

Sarah Palin is only the second woman ever to be selected as a VP nominee. What do you think?

I admire her for trying to "have it all!"
Not sure how she's going to balance everything.
She should focus on her kids, not her career.
