Food for the Shower
Tasty Treats for the Baby Shower
By Jessica Williams
While planning a shower, food and cake should be considered. There are many options: If the shower is casual, chips and dip might do. But if you are planning something a little larger, elegant trays can be easy to prepare.
First, decide which foods will complement the location of the event. If you are planning to hold the shower in a park on a hot summer day, raw vegetable trays, sweet rolls or slices of sourdough bread will stand the heat. Anything that may spoil should be packed well in ice. Also, be sure to bring plenty of water for the guests. Almost anything works for an indoor shower, providing you have the refrigeration and heating appliances.
Don't forget to consider the guest of honor. Is salsa giving her heartburn lately? Is she completely turned off by orange juice? A pregnant woman's body changes day by day, which sometimes means her preferences change too. Make sure you check with the mom-to-be to see if their are foods she wants to avoid during the shower. And don't forget to find out about any of her latest cravings!
1 lb. fresh chopped spinach, or frozen, thawed and squeezed dry
1 container (16 oz.) sour cream
3/4 cup mayonnaise
2 tsp. Dijon-style mustard
2 envelopes (1 box) Spinach Soup mix (Lipton works well)
3 green onions, chopped
1 round Sheep Herder's Bread (or sourdough)
Instructions:
Combine spinach, sour cream, mayonnaise and mustard in a large bowl. Add soup mix and green onions. Cover and refrigerate for at least two hours.
With a large knife, hollow out the bread (cut as if you were carving a pumpkin). The hollowed bread will serve as a bowl for the dip. Cut medium-sized pieces from the bread that was removed. Spread fresh spinach leaves around the hollowed bread on a platter and arrange cut pieces over the spinach leaves. Fill the hollowed bread with dip and serve immediately.
