Recipe for Success
Gwen McKee's Cookbooks Sizzle!
By Kendeyl Johansen
McKee and Moseley consider several factors when including a recipe in a Best of the Best book. "More than anything else the recipe must be quick and easy," says McKee. "People are getting more health conscious, but it doesn't matter how healthy a recipe is if it doesn't taste good. There are three things to a good recipe – taste, taste and taste."
Besides quickness, easiness and good taste, McKee has found that many of today's cooks want to return to the "comfort foods" they enjoyed as children. Popular modern recipes take a traditional American food and cut preparation time – recipes might substitute pre-cut, quality frozen vegetables for fresh vegetables that take longer to prepare.
McKee's grandkids love to help her cook, just like her own children did when they were growing up. She advises using fun to entice little helpers to cook. Below are some of her tips for quality family kitchen time:
- Make silly-shaped pancakes.
- Use fun molds for foods like meat loaf or desserts.
- Choose foods kids can get their fingers into. Try making bread, cookies and hamburgers.
