Recipe for Success
Gwen McKee's Cookbooks Sizzle!
By Kendeyl Johansen
In addition to McKee's grandkids helping with the tasting and testing of new recipes, her grown sons and daughter have helped Quail Ridge Press thrive. "My oldest son talked me into a computer when he noticed our accounts were written on tablets – this was when he was in 11th grade. He helped me buy a computer, and he set it up," she says. He also writes all of the computer programs for the business.
McKee's second son directs the binding all of the books, and her daughter tests recipes and acts as an important part of McKee's support system. "I know when I have a problem with one of recipes, or anything else, I can call and she'll help me through it," McKee says.
She proudly admits that cooking is a passion, but her family comes first in her heart. "When I go on QVC to sell books, I love to show family pictures, and the audience loves it," McKee says. She takes turns bringing her grandkids with her when she travels
for work and enjoys showing them historical sights, like the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia.
Travel is easier now that her kids are grown, but she'll always relish time at home with her loved ones. "My biggest triumph is when I can still get my whole family to sit down at the table together, not only for the food but for the experience of sharing things with one another and talking out problems," McKee says. While raising her kids McKee encouraged her family to share delicious meals together whenever possible, and she advises other families to find their own favorite dishes and do the same. McKee knows from experience it's the perfect recipe for a savory life.
