Be Good to Your Valentine
Foods That Say "I Love You!"
By Donna Smith
"Living in Michigan, it's kind of hard to have an outside picnic in February!" says Jim. "Once, I gathered all the houseplants and put them into one room. In the middle of all the plants I set up the picnic. It was like being in the middle of a forest ... well, almost. My wife enjoyed it anyhow."
Place a couple of pillar candles in the middle of the blanket, then lay out your wonderful spread of food. A bowl of dressed-up macaroni salad, stuffed cherry tomatoes, a loaf of crusty French bread and a bottle of wine makes a delicious meal. If you prefer a more traditional picnic, make some sandwiches, but use a good loaf of bread such as Italian or Rye. Stuffed cherry tomatoes would be great with sandwiches as well. A simple bowl of strawberries served with sour cream, powdered sugar or brown sugar for dipping is a quick, but romantic, end to the meal.
When asked to name a food associated with Valentine's Day, most would probably say strawberries. Instead of using strawberries in the dessert, why not make them part of your main course? strawberry salsa combines the sweetness of strawberries with the hotness of jalapenos – a wonderful combination! The salsa is great on grilled chicken breasts or broiled pork chops. Serve with a Caesar or garden salad, crescent rolls and oven-roasted asparagus. Since you used the strawberries in your main dish, try white chocolate cheesecake for dessert. You can garnish the cheesecake with a few slices of strawberry, if you wish.
