Three Experts Share Healthy Eating Strategies

  • In potluck situations, offer to bring a dish that you like and know is low in calories, such as a salad (low-fat dressing on the side) or crudit豠(the fancy name for a veggie tray). Whenever possible, Jordan makes sure she has a homemade option so that she doesn't have to rely on willpower alone.
  • In non-potluck situations, keep your head. Scope out the buffet table and make very deliberate healthy choices, such as the crudit豮 If there are no visible veggies, other good choices are anything that isn't deep-fried, loaded with cheese or features processed meats. Most appetizer tables have a dish with tortillas topped with cream cheese, salsa and lettuce. Also look for shrimp, tomatoes with mozzarella, bread products and anything as close to its natural state as possible. Use all the salsa you want. Remember, these are choices based not necessarily on calories, but on healthy eating.
  • If it's a banquet-type situation where you serve yourself, load your plate with salad and go easy on the meat, potatoes and starches.
  • Plan ahead. Prepare and freeze some quick meals so your hectic schedule doesn't force you to eat fast food. There are many delicious and healthy choices in the freezer section of your market that can be zapped very quickly in the microwave. In particular, check out the organic foods section of the frozen food aisles.
  • If the party is at your house, treat your guests to delicious, healthy foods. Vegetarian doesn't just mean salads anymore. Although Jordan doesn't eat meat, for those that do check out cookbooks such as Stephen Raichlen's series of high flavor, low-fat cook books. It won him a James Beard award for a reason.
