Simply Pureed

One-ingredient Meals for Baby

Just like some adults like their mashed potatoes smooth and others with lumps, babies all have different ideas on how thick their puree should be. O'Shea says there are several options on how to thin prepared puree. "A small amount of water or cooking liquid is a good choice," she says. "Depending on the fruit or vegetable, a small amount of breast milk or formula is also a good option. As Baby gets more accustomed to eating, adding a small amount of rice cereal will provide a thicker texture for Baby as well." She says juice is not a good option because it adds a lot of sugar.

Swinney recommends starting with breast milk or formula. "By using a taste that a baby is already used to, it will help him to be more accepting of the new food," she says.

One Ingredient at a Time
While it might be tempting to mix and match different fruits and vegetables to come up with a unique taste for Baby, it's best to wait a while. "It's important to introduce foods one by one so that any issues with allergies, intolerances or digestive issues can be more easily identified," O'Shea says. "If there is an issue, it's much more easy to determine the source if you introduce foods one at a time with ideally four days in between. Once a few foods have successfully been introduced, then you can begin pairing and mixing them for new and interesting flavors!"
