One-ingredient Meals for Baby

Swinney says allergies tend to run in families. "So families with any kind of allergy or asthma – not just food allergy – should be more careful and watchful when introducing new foods," she says.

When a parent is ready to add to the puree, it's best to start with rice cereal. "Rice cereal is the least likely to cause an allergic reaction so it is recommended for a baby's first cereal," Swinney says. "Whole grain, organic rice cereal is now available, which is a great choice!"

"If your baby prefers wheat or rye cereal, there is nothing wrong with using that to thicken a puree," O'Shea says.

Perfectly Safe
A baby's immune system is sensitive because it is not fully developed, Swinney says. "Therefore, it's really important to follow the four steps to food safety: clean, separate, cook and chill," she says.

  • Clean: Wash hands, utensils and storage dishes well before beginning. Wash and scrub produce, using organic if possible, when preparing fruit and vegetables.
  • Cook: Cook meats, poultry, fish and eggs to the proper internal temperature.
  • Separate: Don't cross contaminate cooked foods with uncooked foods – keep separate cutting boards and use an antibacterial cleaner on counter tops that have blood or meat juices spilled on them.
  • Chill: Immediately chill or freeze food that won't be served to baby immediately. Don't serve to Baby (or anyone else!) food that has been left at room temperature for two hours or more (one hour when the temperature is above 90 degrees Fahrenheit).
  • Swinney also reminds parents not to add honey or corn syrup to a baby's food. "They don't need the extra sugar and they could contain botulism spores," she says.
