Dietary Cautions
7 Foods to Avoid During Pregnancy
By Donna Smith
"Only consume pasteurized cheeses and other dairy products," Brennan says. "Replace with pasteurized cheese such as low-fat Swiss or part-skim mozzarella."
Swordfish is one of several fish (and shark, king mackerel and tilefish) that can be high in mercury and should not be eaten during pregnancy, Dr. Carson says. "The mercury is in the form of methylmercury," she says. "Methylmercury can cause neurological damage in a fetus or young child."
Brennan agrees, adding that caution should also be used when nursing as mercury may also be transported in breast milk. "Replace with wild-caught, lower-mercury-content fish like salmon or white fish and limit servings to no more than 12 ounces of fish per week," she says.
Phelan has cut swordfish out of her diet. "Based on feedback from family, friends and all of the literature read, I am avoiding swordfish due to mercury content," she says.
If you prefer to make homemade Caesar dressing the old-fashioned way with raw eggs, you may want to consider switching to bottled until Baby arrives.
"Raw egg – never!" Dr. Carson says. "Egg can contain salmonella. If it is not cooked the salmonella is not killed and whoever it eats it can become ill, sometimes seriously ill."
Brennan agrees. "Raw egg may contain salmonella bacteria, which may cause gastrointestinal illness (vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pains) and may also lead to stillbirth," she says.

Dietary Cautions While Pregnant by Tiffany on 07/01/2009 01:32AM
OMG. Thank you so much for this article. I had no idea that homemade caesar dressing was bad while pregnant. I've been craving salt and caesar salad, and have been making my dressing recipe. Will stop and eat it with another dressing going forward. Hopefully this craving will pass soon. Appreciate the advice. Great website!!! I'm due in November!!
