The Grain Connection

Folic Acid's Role in Preventing Neural Tube Defects

By Teri Brown

"These studies were conducted in Europe, Eastern Europe, Great Britain and Canada," says Dr. Smith. "The fortification recommendation occurred in September of 1992 after much debate within the public health community. Many wanted a higher level of fortification – above the 400 micrograms per day recommended. The number of children with neural tube defects has declined dramatically, and as you know, birth defects (even in this country) are a leading cause of infant mortality."

Start Before Conception
The consensus is that increasing your folic acid intake before conception is the most effective way to prevent birth defects because so many of them occur during the first three weeks, before many women know they are pregnant.

"Most women do not consume enough folic acid, and it is known that supplemental folic acid is better absorbed than the form found in foods," says Dr. Smith. "It is critical that the folic acid be consumed by the mother before the pregnancy and before the development of the embryonic spinal cord and brain, which occurs in the first 28 days after conception."

A recent survey conducted by the Grain Foods Foundation found that one in three women were unaware that a pre-conception diet is "very important" – and equally important – as diet during pregnancy. Though folic acid can be found naturally in green leafy vegetables, one of the best places to find the vitamin in foods is in fortified grains.

So next time you are considering that basket full of rolls, have one. What a guilt-free way to enjoy your carbs and keep everyone healthy in the process.
