Sensible Holiday Eating During Pregnancy
By Teri Brown
The medical community has found that excess weight gain can make labor more difficult and increase the risk of having a Cesarean section since babies may be larger than average. "Overweight pregnant women also have more trouble breastfeeding than normal weight women and tend to have a more difficult postpartum recovery," says Andrews.
Dr. Kenneth E. Johnson, assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and director of the university's Women's Health Center, believes that women need to be especially careful of their diets at this time.
"Sweets in excess can be a problem, especially for pregnant women who have gestational diabetes," says Dr. Johnson. "Women with gestational diabetes should, of course, follow their prescribed diet closely and avoid sugars as much as possible. The empty calories in sweets may also add weight to mothers, and this can increase labor difficulties and perhaps increase the Cesarean section risk."
