Healthy Eating During Preconception
Good Nutrition While You're Trying to Conceive
By Alison Gamble
If you find you are over 120 percent (considered moderately overweight) of your ideal body weight, then you should take steps to change your eating habits. Try keeping a three-day food diary, and don't hold back! You want to get a realistic view of what you are putting in your body. Write down portion sizes, when, why and what time you are eating. After that, you can figure out if the bulk of your calories is coming from breads, sweets, etc., or maybe you are eating healthy, but just eating too much.
Real Risks
Here are some of the risks associated with obesity (greater than 130 percent of your ideal body weight) and pregnancy:
- Increased risk for antenatal complications
Pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) - Gestational diabetes
- Urinary tract infection
- Increased labor/difficult vaginal delivery
- Increased risk of perinatal mortality
