Melanie's Diary Entries

December 22, 1999

The 14-hour plane trip with Kalli went surprisingly well. Of course, they only had a vegan meal for me, not her, even though I had specifically requested that our travel agent check to make sure we both had one ordered for us. She must have assumed, as most people do, that I couldn't possibly have meant that my toddler was a vegan! She had a child meal, though, and there was enough for her to eat between the bread, veggies and the fruit plate from my meal. Luckily, my snack bag was full, so she had plenty of good food to eat. My dried fruit and nuts were confiscated in the Sydney airport, but I still had small boxes of soymilk, mini cereal boxes and individual packages of nori (dried seaweed) that she loves to eat. You know, I wonder if they even offer a veggie meal for children -- I'll have to call the airline for the return trip.

My family has been surprisingly understanding about our diet, although they are teasing me relentlessly. Yesterday my aunt suggested we stop at Jack in the Box for a burger when we were driving around looking for a sushi place (I love those cucumber sushi rolls!). Also, they told me that my uncle had planned barbecue chicken for our welcome dinner because, "All vegetarians eat chicken and fish, don't they?" They were shocked to see Kalli eating a soy hotdog and my aunt suggested that if I wanted to "cheat on my diet" she wouldn't tell anyone. Really, all the ribbing has been a lot nicer than the grilling and explaining I expected.

I am in heaven with the health food selection here! I'm able to try all these things that I can't buy overseas but that I hear people on vegetarian message boards talking about all the time. Can't wait to visit the health food store and deli downtown that's owned by the planetveggie.com people and get some soymilk eggnogg!

Merry Christmas everyone!

Melanie
