Melanie's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

Introduction

I am having so much fun visiting health food stores while here on vacation in Hawaii. Though I am thrilled with the tofu sour cream, tofu cream cheese, Rice Dream ice cream and veggie burgers, I still haven’t been able to find one of the things I wanted most to try: soymilk eggnog. Oh well…such is the life of a vegan. I have never been to one health food store that had everything I wanted. Overall, I am happy with the selection and I am pleased to see the wider range of health food choices in the regular supermarkets.

This week I made vegetarian spaghetti for my aunt’s family. Everyone loved it, and even my uncle was fooled! I used Veggie Ground Round and all the regular ingredients and it turned out great! They did still insist on butter for their French bread and Caesar dressing for their salad, but those are things that are easy to fix vegan for me and my daughter on the side.

I can’t tell you how relieved I am that my family is so accepting of our lifestyle. The only comment anyone made was on Christmas day: “You should try some turkey. It’s lean meat.” I guess because I am not a radical activist and only talk about my beliefs about food, health, and animal rights when someone specifically asks, there are always going to be people who think I’m just on a diet.

Though I write about food issues here, I’m happy to say it actually hasn’t been the center of focus on this vacation. Our visit with family has been so wonderful. It’s great to watch my 2-year-old, Kalli, run around and play with all her cousins, to see how much we’ve all grown and changed, and to sit and have long talks with my aunt over coffee -- hers with milk and mine with Vitasoy.

Happy New Year everyone!

Melanie
