Shel's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

Introduction

Precious Moments, Snowballs, Thumbprints, and Pinwheels are all reminders of my failures in the kitchen. It seems as though cookie baking is an art in my family. From my grandmothers on down, each woman is an artist, a nonstick cookie sheet her canvas. Yet, even as a little girl, I knew my heart and hands did not house this familial talent. I avoided the kitchen until it came time to lick the beaters. As I grew older, I could sense how much my mother wanted to share this time honored tradition with me. I gave in once or twice. But frankly, I can't be bothered. All the measuring, stirring, and watching the clock drives me batty. Not to mention the clean up, which is my greatest annoyance. Still, I adore the cookies. And if I don't bake them, I pray someone will. At times, I've felt guilty wondering if my mother is bothered by my disinterest. However, I now hold a different perspective. You see, we need each other. It doesn't take a genius to notice how few cookies are eaten by the bakers. For them the joy is in the baking. For me, it's in the eating. Together, we make the holiday season go 'round.

May your holiday be filled with joy and, of course, a cookie or two!
