Expert Q&A

Before I was pregnant, I took ballet lessons. Due to a previous miscarriage and my doctor's orders, I stopped taking the lessons during the first trimester of this pregnancy. I am ready to start back up in a couple of weeks and I am wondering if it's safe and if I need to make any special modifications to my dance routines?

As far as if it's OK to exercise now, that's a judgement call for your doctor. If you're able to start in a few weeks, simply modify your workout according to how you feel. Ballet is not as taxing on the cardiovascular system, so you would mainly need to be aware of basic issues like staying hydrated, making sure your exercise space is well ventilated, and listen to you body. If any exercises place a strain on your belly or back, discontinue them. Avoid doing exercises while lying on your back after the 4th month, and eat at least an extra 300 calories per day when you're exercising regularly to avoid going into a calorie deficit. Be aware that as your baby grows, your center of gravity will change and feel a little awkward when you dance. Just make adjustments and go with your doctor's advice.

Congratulations and good luck with your pregnancy!
