Expert Q&A

I am about six weeks pregnant and I am a little concerned about my appetite. I am feeling hungry about every three to four hours and I am concerned about gaining too much weight since I am already overweight. How should I eat during the day. I am eating about every five hours, and as close to 6pm as possible. ?Maria, New Orleans."
The key to not gaining a lot of weight is to opt for the most nutrient dense foods possible. If you are feeling hungry every three to four hours try going for fruit and vegetables first. You will do your fetus a world of good by supplying it with the vitamins and minerals necessary to help it develop into a healthy baby.
For snacks, avoid empty calories such as those found in processed foods. Processed foods are low in nutrients and only offer empty calories. Empty calories equal unwanted pounds. (It's too bad all the empty calories taste so good!)
Remember, you only need 300 extra calories in the second and third trimesters; that is equivalent to a sandwich and a glass of juice. It's not the calories the baby needs above everything else. The baby is going to benefit the most from the healthy low calorie, nutrient dense foods you select.
Also, keep in mind that the time to diet is before, not during, pregnancy. That is not to say you can't change your eating and exercise habits during pregnancy. You may want to eat your three meals with snacks in between to offset the hunger. Your snacks should not be equivalent to a full meal...just simple foods to get you through until your next meal. A fruit smoothie, or a cold pasta salad with fresh vegetables. There are many quick options out there! Try different snacks so you don't get bored. Good luck to you! Take care."
