Expert Q&A

By Allison Gamble
Nutritionist/Diet Technician Highland Park Hospital, Illinois

I think the prenatal vitamins my doctor prescribed are making me nauseous. Is it okay to take an over-the-counter multivitamin with a folic acid supplement instead?

Why not? It's your body. Especially if you think the vitamins are the source for your nausea. You may want to stop taking the vitamins for a week and see if the nausea goes away. If it does, most likely it was the vitamins. If it doesn't, then you might be nauseated due to all the hormonal changes occuring.

I say go ahead and try the O-T-C vitamins and see how you feel. I think a vitamin is a vitamin, and I doubt your doctor would make you stay on a supplement that was making you sick. Just remember, a vitamin is a supplement, not a replacement for real nutrient-dense foods! Good luck and I hope you feel better!!
