Expert Q&A

By Allison Gamble
Nutritionist/Diet Technician Highland Park Hospital, Illinois

I love sushi (raw fish), can I still eat sushi while being pregnant? Thank you! - Genevieve"

My opinion is to stay away from the raw fish, especially while you are pregnant. Eating raw fish increases your chance of getting hepatitis B, cholera or a parasitic infection (like roundworm).

Even if you have never been sick from raw fish, a woman's immune system may respond differently during pregnancy and make her more susceptible to infection, and it is better to be safe than sorry. Your baby's health is not worth risking. Until the baby arrives, I recommend you stick to sushi with imitation crabmeat, or sushi with only vegetables."
