Expert Q&A

By Traci Kurtzer
Obstetrician and Gynecologist

Why do doctors prescribe prenatal vitamins?

Most OB/GYNs ask their patients to start a prenatal vitamin to ensure adequate levels of vitamins to allow for prevention of birth defects, healthy fetal development and avoidance of maternal anemia before delivery. To prevent spina bifida and other neural tube defects, we recommend folic acid supplementation of at least 0.4mg for at least one month prior to conception. This can be in the form of a vitamin or folic acid tablets."
