Expert Q&A

What exercise can I do to make my butt more shapely?

Genetics play a big role in a person's body shape, bottoms included, and because the posterior is comprised of muscle and a lot of fat, weight loss can change its shape dramatically. The best way to build up your bottom without putting the fat back is to do exercises that focus on your gluteus (buttock) muscles.

A good starting exercise is the hip lift. Simply lay on your back with your knees bent and feet on the floor. Inhale and then as you exhale slowly raise your buttocks off the floor until you feel your gluteus muscles tense, hold five to 10 seconds and return to starting position. Repeat eight to 12 times. Squats and lunges are great exercises for strengthening and shaping your gluteul muscles, but make sure to work with a fitness trainer when starting those exercises to make sure you use proper form."
