Expert Q&A

What should you look for when joining a gym? What should you avoid?

Here's a list of some points to consider:

  • Is the staff qualified to provide fitness training and information (ask about certifications such as ACSM, ACE, IDEA or AFAA)?
  • How does the monthly cost compare to the services?
  • Are the gym, locker and shower rooms clean and well lit, and is the equipment current and in working order?
  • Does the gym offer equipment and classes you're interested in taking?
  • Does the gym have an environment that feels comfortable to you? Make sure to visit the gym during the time you plan on coming to see how busy it is and whether you'll be able to get on equipment without long waits.
  • Can you cancel your membership at any time, or are you locked into a long commitment? Be sure to read ALL the fine print in your contract to make sure you're not signing up for more than you realized.
  • Is the location of the fitness center convenient to home or work? That can make or break whether you use your membership.
  • Do you feel welcome when you come into the fitness center? If not, keep looking until you find the place that makes you feel motivated to visit.
