Expert Q&A

By Cynthia Lair

My 14-month-old son is allergic to cheese, yogurt and milk. What should I put in his diet to replace cow's milk?

First it is important to remember that there are many cultures in the world where children are raised without drinking cow's milk. My daughter is also allergic to cow's milk -- I breastfed her for two years. By that time she was eating a wide variety of foods and so I didn't worry about giving her a milk replacement. Occasionally I gave her some diluted soy or nut milk in a bottle as a comfort, but not as a source of nourishment. Instead I made sure that she was eating lots of whole grains, nuts, beans, vegetables, fish and other wholesome foods. Children can also easily become allergic to soy products if they are overused. If you do choose to give your child an alternative milk try rotating them (rice, soy, nut) so that a sensitivity doesn't arise."
