My son is allergic to milk and milk products. How can I assure he gets enough calcium?

Fortified soy products, as long as he is not allergic to them, also. Many children who are allergic to milk protein are also allergic to soy, so you should not assume that you can automatically switch to soy without problems. Depending on his age, there are a number of choices: fortified juices (make sure they provide at least 30 percent of the Daily Value for calcium so that it comes close to milk); fortified breakfast cereals; green leafy vegetables; figs; and legumes. I recommend consulting a registered dietitian about your son's allergy. Just a single session with an R.D. can put your mind at ease. Good luck.
