What should I avoid on a salad bar to keep my meal as healthy as possible?
The joy of eating a salad bar is you choose what to put on your plate. A salad bar can be very nutritious or full of fat, depending on your choices. Salad dressing can really blow a good salad into a sea of fat. Put a small amount, put it on the side and dip your fork into it, or use a 'lite' dressing. You can often use less vinaigrette simply because it is more liquid and can be mixed into your salad more easily.
Other foods to limit or avoid include mayonnaise and cream-based salads like potato salad, pasta salads and desserts. Cheese, bacon, nuts and croutons are also high fat options.
Now for the healthier choices! Go for the veggies, plain fruits, eggs, ham, beans and marinated salads. Avocado, olives and nuts are high fat, but they contain monounsaturated fat, a healthy choice."
