Expert Q&A

By Cynthia Lair
Nutritionist

Which foods can be constipating for adults?

In general, foods that have no fiber tend to be more constipating than foods that do have fiber. Refined grains (white flour, white rice), dairy products and animal protein can be constipating because they have no fiber to help transit time. Fruits and vegetables, beans and whole grains have fiber and keep things moving.

The most common cause of constipation is not drinking enough water and not getting enough exercise."
