How can I increase the fitness benefits of our family walks?
Walking is one of the most healthful and fun ways to gain fitness and family togetherness in one activity. The
best way to gain fitness from walking is to maintain a brisk pace and include some hills for extra cardiovascular conditioning. Swing your arms as you walk and try to walk for at
least 30 minutes, three or more days a week.
If some members of the family are in better shape than others, they can wear a backpack filled with water bottles and other supplies. The extra weight will help provide a good workout for fitter walkers in the case that the walk pace needs to be slower for less fit family members. Keep in mind that walking helps to enhance conversation and mood – two things that can provide a positive reinforcement for continued family walks!"
