Mother's Bread and Butter Pickles

This recipe is a family favorite that has been around for generations.
Ingredients
6 quarts cucumbers, sliced
6 large onions, sliced
1 cup salt
1 1/2 quarts vinegar
5 cups sugar
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/2 cup mustard seed
1 tablespoon celery seed
1 teaspoon turmeric
Directions
Place cucumbers, onions and salt in large container. Let stand four hours, then drain.
Bring to boil vinegar, sugar, cayenne pepper, mustard seed, celery seed and turmeric. Add cucumbers. Reduce heat and simmer (do not boil). Pack hot.
